Diana Zapata and Ryan Gleason received All-American team honors after stellar
performances at the State Track and Field State Championships in San Mateo May 15 and 16.
Zapata competed in the 1500M, running a personal and school best 4:41.73 minutes, shattering her previous school record of 4:45.95 minutes set in 2007.
She finished third to Christine Cortez of Mt. SAC and Kimone Hewitt of Orange Coast College.
"I'm very proud of Diana," said Miriam Mitzel, SAC women's assistant coach, "She trained the whole season for this moment. She wanted to break the school record
and she did it. She truly deserves to be an All-American."
Any athlete who places third or higher in the state championship is named to the California Community College All- American team.
Zapata, who came from Mexico more than two years ago, has been the women's team leader despite only speaking Spanish when she arrived.
Although she owns the school record in the 1500M, Zapata is also third in SAC history in the 5000M.
Joining her on the All American team is Gleason who broke the SAC record in the hammer thrower.
He placed third with the throw of 174 feet 10 inches, which was seven inches further than the previous record.
Gleason now holds the top four throws in SAC school history.
"You get respect when you do well," said Ron Witchey, SAC men's assistant coach. "These guys are fun to work with and
work hard. It's great when the work really pays off."
