No. 1 seeded wrestler Jose Navarro outscored his four opponents 58-12 at the Santa Ana College Wrestling Tournament on Oct. 3, leading his Dons to their second first place finish in a tournament for the 2009 season.
The Dons sent six wrestlers into semi-final matches, with sophomores Ted Bristol, Luis Onofre and Navarro each cruising into first place finishes.
Of the 10 weight classes, the Dons had eight wrestlers place, leading them to a team score of 179 points. Sierra College finished second overall with 137.5 points followed by defending state champion Fresno City College with 106 points to round off the top three.
In the final at 149lbs, Navarro defeated Jesse Ponce from Cerritos College with a 13-8 score. The win gives him back-to-back wins at the SAC tournament.
“I was more mentally prepared this time, I had to win, that’s just the mentality I have,” Navarro said.
Bristol took down Sierra’s Mike Vasaar on his way to an 8-3 victory to take the 157lbs weight class. “I felt great going into that final match, I just tried not to make mistakes,” said Bristol. “I’m really glad to have this win under my belt.” Bristol outscored his four opponents 31-11 along with a win coming by pin.
After moving up a weight class, Onofre captured the 184lbs class after defeating Jesus Chavez from Sierra with a score of 8-5. Onofre scored a 9-0 shutout over Rio Hondo College’s Joe Estrada and then pinned Sacramento City’s Chris Gales.
“I’m moving up a weight class for the better of the team,” Onofre said.
Dons wrestlers faced 12 of California’s top wrestling programs winning by a 41.5 point margin.
With three first place wrestlers on their side the Dons will visit Cerritos College on Wednesday.
